The Issue

This problem of housing affordability is so important because of how it will impact not only me but everyone in Canada. Right now, around the time the majority of baby boomers reached the age of 30, the typical single-family house cost $82,800. However, today's millennials' money doesn't go as far. The average millennial who reached 30 in 2019 would have paid $313,000 on a typical home, a figure that much exceeds inflation since 1985 when the average baby boomer turned 30. This proves that homeownership is no longer affordable, and will continue to be harder. Property prices have risen quickly over the past 50 years, outpacing inflation by 150% since 1970 and 6 times from 2000. This is also known as the "Housing Bubble," when property prices rise but can’t be explained with logical reasons such as demographic changes or a rise in interest rates. This problem has been prominent since 1981. All Canadians in the Low - Middle Class are affected by this problem, and it will continue to be a problem for future generations, like us. Although inflation will decrease in 2022 and 2023, it will still be a prominent issue. The debt of the mortgages may also be detrimental, especially to lower-income families. The home value will go up until eventually, very few people will be able to afford a house. As well, inflation is ramping up goods and services, which will factor into the rising price of houses. Housing inflation also factors in with other types of debt, like goods and service debts. This will have a big impact on Canada.

With this petition, I hope to send it to the MP, Ahmed Hussen, or the Minister of Housing. I hope to show support for my claim and hope to get the word to him about this problem.  I understand that there is a big chance that he won't read or respond to this claim, but I feel like with the help of the community, we will succeed!
