The Issue
For years, people living in south-west London and visitors heading to Wimbledon have endured unreliable, overcrowded and frequently delayed service on the District Line — with the section to Wimbledon among the worst-performing parts of London’s Tube network. This isn’t occasional inconvenience — it’s a chronic failure that affects commuting, jobs, local businesses and London’s reputation as a world-class city.
🚇 What’s actually happening?
The Wimbledon branch of the District Line has experienced years of delays, frequent signal failures, track faults and service cancellations.
During the 2025 Wimbledon Championships, the line’s performance plummeted to its worst in more than a decade, leaving thousands stuck in crowds, missing matches, and enduring unsafe platform conditions.
Local MPs have publicly called the chaos an “international embarrassment” for London during one of the city’s biggest sporting events.
📉 Why is this happening?
Much of the track and infrastructure on this section is over 130 years old, making it prone to failure and very limited in capacity,
The signalling systems and track maintenance haven’t been modernised like other parts of the network — meaning signal faults and track problems regularly cause severe service delays, and possibly putting lives at risk.
Responsibility for this section’s signalling and power lies with Network Rail, rather than being modernised fully under TfL — and there’s been insufficient coordination and investment to fix the root causes.
Even Transport for London’s own leadership (Mayor Sadiq Khan, as Chair of the TfL Board) has had to publicly apologise for “horrendous” service performance and admitted frustration — but still no decisive long-term upgrade plan has been put in place, by him, or any involved decision-maker.
⚠️ Why this matters now
This isn’t an occasional problem — it’s structural and long-term. Local MPs and residents report that failures happen year-round, affecting daily commuters, school journeys, and work schedules — not just big event weeks. With transport demand rising and events like Wimbledon attracting global visitors, unsolved issues damage London’s reputation and hurt local livelihoods.
📌 We call for:
✔ Urgent investment in modern signalling, tracks and infrastructure for the Wimbledon branch.
✔ Clear accountability and communication from TfL, the Mayor’s Office and Network Rail.
✔ A published timeline for upgrades and performance targets that residents can hold leaders to.
✔ Regular public reporting on progress and failures — not just apologies after chaos.
✍️ Sign now if you believe SW London deserves reliable public transport, local workers deserve dependable commutes, and our city shouldn’t be embarrassed on the world stage.
