The Issue
As proud members of the Powell River community, we stand firmly in opposition to the proposed Barnet Street Encampment.
The recent announcement from the Powell River City Council to establish a temporary shelter at 7104 Barnet Street—a stones’ throw away from popular hotspots like Save-On-Foods and Starbucks—has left many of us deeply troubled. This isn’t just about a location; it’s about the heart of our neighborhood that so many families cherish.
This site, where residents will be managed by Lift Services, is nestled right in the middle of our community. It’s a place where children play, families gather, and neighbors connect. The planned shelter’s capacity will be double that of the previous site at 4752 Joyce Avenue, raising legitimate concerns. Will this influx attract individuals from other towns to Powell River? Conversations with nearby residents of the previous Joyce location paint a grim picture: one neighbor recounted the distressing reality of finding human waste on their steps and dealing with rampant theft, including bikes and personal belongings. Meanwhile, Lift staff appeared oblivious to the struggles transpiring just outside their doors.
Statistics paint an even grimmer scenario. According to the Powell River area fact page, our crime rates are already 63% higher than the national average, with a staggering annual increase of 31%. Research from the Journal of Experimental Criminology reinforces these fears, revealing that surrounding areas of a shelter can see property crime rates soar by up to 56%, encompassing vehicle theft, property break-ins, and vandalism.
Given these alarming statistics and the lack of community input leading to this decision, we, the residents of Powell River, cannot endorse the establishment of the Barnet Street shelter. Our voices deserve to be heard, and our collective concerns must be addressed before proceeding down this troubling path. Together, we advocate for a thoughtful discussion that prioritizes the safety and well-being of our entire community.
