Hold Sa’id Abdullah “Deni” Accountable and Remove him from Office

On November 6, 2019, the president of Puntland state of Somalia, Sa’id Abdullahi “Deni” committed an act of barbarity when he ordered his troops to seize control of the Parliament building; they killed dozens of civilians and parliamentary guards in the ensuing process with the sole aim of eliminating a democratically elected House President, Abdihakin Dhobo. The next morning, an illegal motion was drafted, circulated, and passed by corrupt legislators who voted to remove the House President Dhobo. The motion was financed with aid funds intended for development and humanitarian purposes.
There were widespread demonstrations held in Sanaag, Sool, and Bari regions condemning the barbarous act and calling for the immediate resignation of Deni.
Mr. Deni’s actions clearly demonstrate dictatorship in full force. He arbitrarily orders his troops to terrorize peaceful communities and commit human rights violations. On December 9, barely a month after the violent coup, president Deni sent his handpicked new speaker along with a heavily armed convoy to Badhan, Dhahar, and other towns in Sanaag region. Eye-witnesses report the troops started firing shots, artillery and heavy gun fire from at least three (3) KM before entering Midigale, Sanaag (see video report) ; They seriously injured two school-aged children and an elder. One person died during the incident and one of the injured later succumbed to injuries sustained.
The elders of Midigale, Sanaag region condemned the orchestrated violence and warned of the consequences of ill-driven military campaigns that terrorize peaceful communities with impunity.
It was U.S. Ambassador Yamamoto who released a statement calling for a peaceful settlement of political differences after the incident. However, Mr. Deni is not bound by any norms of decency and the rule of law. He has yet to face charges against his sanctioned violence and crimes against both civilians and opposition.
If you believe Deni should face charges and be held accountable, please sign the petition.
