The Issue
To My Fellow 2020 Candidates and American Voters,
Like so many of my fellow candidates, we share many personal and professional reasons why we are driven to run for our United States Congress in 2020. Matter of fact, I am your self-funded Independent candidate for California's 50th Congressional District for the United States House of Representatives. I am driven to run for our United States Congress for fundamental human rights like freedom of expression, assembly, a free press, and universal suffrage. I also believe as an American voter; such fundamental human rights must be advocated, championed, and supported clearly and consistently from all candidates like you and me.
For this reason, I am urging my fellow candidates in the United States running for elected offices in 2020 to demonstrate your support for fundamental human rights like freedom of expression, assembly, a free press, an independent judiciary, and universal suffrage. Likewise, I am asking my fellow American voters to show their support for the defense of freedom of expression, assembly, a free press, an independent judiciary, and universal suffrage; within the United States of America and in Hong Kong.
Some voters and candidates might question why should we as a country become involved with the 2019 Hongkongers protests. Nowadays, our economy, environment, international food chain, national security, and so much more are increasingly becoming more interdependent internationally for financing, transportation, investment, and development on a global scale.
In short, our world is becoming much more interconnected in predictable as well as in unpredictable ways. Inter-connectivity and interdependence energized by our Internet, Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, 5G networks, and other factors will only increase over time. All the more reason for mutual understanding, respect, and genuine appreciation of our fundamental human rights, desires, and hopes should be advocated, championed, and supported clearly and consistently.
I ask you to be the change you want, expect, and hope others to become; so that we can build a better tomorrow for our families, friends, and environment. We all know, understand, and accept China and America rely on each other in so many ways. When our two countries work together, our world is indeed a safer, prosperous, tolerant, and inclusive place to live, work, and study for everyone. America and China will continue to become interconnected and interdependent more and more on each other for our foreseeable future.
So let's start responsibly build a better future for you and me by advocating, championing, and supporting clearly and consistently our Hongkongers inalienable fundamental human rights of freedom of expression, assembly, a free press, an independent judiciary, and universal suffrage.
Let us carefully remember what happened in Beijing's Tiananmen Square, in June of 1989. China abruptly halts live news telecasts in Beijing. After several weeks of demonstrations, the Chinese military entered Tiananmen Square on June 4th and fired on civilians. An estimated 10,000 people were arrested during and after the protests. A dozen people were executed for their parts in the demonstrations. According to Sir Alan Donald, the British ambassador to Beijing during the Tiananmen Square massacre, an estimated 10,000 people died in 1989 crackdown on protests. All this happen in 1989 in China for people demanding fundamental human rights like freedom of expression, assembly, a free press, an independent judiciary, and universal suffrage. An official death toll has never been released. Many of the protesters in Beijing's Tiananmen Square in 1989 were students and China's youth.
Fast forward to today in 2019, Hongkongers are protesting for their fundamental human rights; such as freedom of expression, assembly, a free press, an independent judiciary, and universal suffrage. Just like the students and youth did in June 1989, in Beijing's Tiananmen Square.
As American voters and candidates, by signing this petition we are sending a clear and consistent message to the military and authorities of China's Communist Party, Hong Kong, and in particular to the People's Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison that we are carefully watching, documenting, and recording as much as we can.
By candidates signing the petition it is my sincere hope, intention, and expectation that my fellow candidates running for elected office in 2020 will be moved, compelled, and genuinely committed to demonstrating their official support for the fundamental human rights; for Hongkongers such as the freedom of expression, assembly, a free press, an independent judiciary, and universal suffrage.
Our 2019 Hongkongers protests have evolved beyond a protest against a single extradition bill. Our 2019 Hongkongers protests for the defense of fundamental human rights has all the hallmarks, characteristics, and traits of the courage, bravery, and principled convictions of the students and youth in Tiananmen Square on June 4th, 1989.
As American voters and candidates by signing this petition, we can demonstrate accountable, transparent, and meaningful solidarity with our Hongkongers. As American voters and candidates by signing this petition, we may, at the very least help deter or prevent another repeat of the Tiananmen Square massacre on June 4th, 1989, upon our Hongkongers, many who are just students and youths.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Most Sincerely,
H. F. Shioura
