The Issue

Unless we can convince the Board of Cancer Research UK to reverse its decision, the Cancer Research UK (CRUK) retail shop on Victoria Street in Surbiton will close its doors permanently at the end of July.

The CRUK shop in Surbiton holds a special place in our hearts and has been an integral part of our community for several decades. It has not only been meeting its targets successfully but also raising essential funds that contribute significantly towards finding a cure for cancer. The closure of this shop would not just be a loss for the high street but a setback in the fight against cancer that affects many families.

The CRUK shop in Surbiton is more than just a charity retail outlet; it has become a beacon of hope and support for those affected by cancer. The shop's contributions help fund life-saving research that has improved survival rates and brought hope to millions of individuals fighting this dreadful disease. By meeting its targets, the shop demonstrates its importance and effectiveness in aiding cancer research.

However, despite its success and positive impact, there are plans to close down the CRUK shop with staff and volunteers having been told the lease has run out and the cost of renewal is the main reason for the proposed closure.  This news is disheartening for both the residents of Surbiton and the patrons who rely on the shop for affordable items, as well as the staff and countless volunteers who dedicate their time to this vital cause.

Losing this shop would mean losing a community asset that has been a part of our high street culture, bringing people together with a shared mission of eradicating cancer. The shop's presence also supports the local economy by attracting customers to the area, making it a focal point of activity and engagement on the high street.

We urge the management of Cancer Research UK to reconsider their decision to close this profitable and impactful shop. We call upon them to renegotiate the lease. And accepting efficiencies need to be found we urge them to consider the wider regional situation with a view to providing easy access to a CRUK store for all, as currently the closure decision only negatively impacts the residents of Surbiton and neighbouring areas.

Please join us in our effort to keep the CRUK shop in Surbiton open, sustaining both the fight against cancer and our local community spirit.

Your signature can make a difference. Please sign the petition today and share with your family, friends and neighbours. Let’s pull together to keep this shop open so it can continue to benefit many.
