HOWARD UNIVERSITY HOUSING FOR JUNIORS AND SENIORS

The Issue

Howard University Currently has no plan to offer housing for juniors and seniors, there are currently no housing options that allow students to place rent, and costs of living on to their student bill. Having official Howard dorms allows the option for students to pay for housing through federally approved loans or scholarships as housing is an education expense. As Howard continues to move forward with in person classes, affordable and on campus housing options are especially needed for students.

To reiterate the situation, this upcoming school year begins Fall 2022 THERE ARE NO DORMS FOR HOWARD UNIVERSITY JUNIORS OR SENIORS, who carry the responsibility of passing the torch that is Howard University, our mission and value to serve our communities. There needs to be an immediate and official investment into housing, as many students housed this year experienced displacement and difficulties due to failure to upkeep Howard Plaza Towers East and West (Mold, Electricity Failures, Cloudy Water, Wifi Outages, and more ) A single room costing $11,968 in a building without proper ventilation, no living rooms, abandoned mailrooms.

Howard University's greatness has been built upon the reputation and life works of its student body. Howard's Graduation Rate of 63%, is not becoming of its Illustrious title. Our statistics can supported by our lack of support. Currently there is no plan to house any junior or senior on campus or off campus.

SEE THE CHANGE BE THE CHANGE

It is time for change. This has been an ongoing concern that has yet to be properly represented and addressed. Please let it be known that after an independent organization hosted a viral protest, and seemingly achieved their goal , there has still been no action or plan enacted by Howard University, or its Campus Life and Residency department. There is no plan to house Juniors and/or Seniors, and no statement discussing the intention of building one. A failure to plan is a plan to fail. Juniors and Seniors need the support of their Howard University, as our tuition pays for the investment in our education. Housing is a need and an expense of education, which begs to ask why Howard University has not used any funding to acquire contracts that house students and in proper buildings, that are able to offer affordable rates able to be listed on students' bills close to campus. Today we ask you to sign this petition and share it, so that it can prompt a conversation and encourage a plan of action to be brought by Howard University to support its students.

We are asking for immediate action to create more on-campus housing for specifically accommodating Howard University students.

The current options for housing are filled to capacity with freshman, sophomore’s, and athlete’s. There is still a housing crisis on this campus. The solution is the investment by the University to contract housing properties and create more and better dorms, that specifically do not require students to sign a lease. This needs to be done immediately.

How are full time students, with families already struggling to support their education, expected to sign a lease in city with unrealistic rising rates, in the middle of a pandemic?
