Music by Sia : Stop casting neurotypical actors in autistic roles
The issue
My beautiful teenage brother has autism which extremely impacts his daily life; from his education, to his social interaction and the way in which he completes tasks. After viewing the Sia's recent movie trailer for 'Music' featuring Maddie Ziegler (a typical person) in the role of an atypical character, I and my family believe Sia is doing a disservice to those with autism which is grossly misrepresented and completely offensive.
In a climate of misunderstanding, it is important that artists who have great platforms such as Sia to spread positivity and authenticity, in which she has severely missed the point of what this movie should represent. Through the casting of Ziegler, the accuracy of this representation of autistic people has been diluted and it conveys the message that people with disabilities are unable or perhaps unwelcome to represent their own personal narratives which have not been celebrated through this particular portrayal of autistic people.
As such, I wish for Sia to use her platform with responsibility and make a public apology. One which states that she apologises for her irresponsible and offensive choice in casting Ziegler which as it stands, spreads inaccurate and derogatory stereotypes which harm vulnerable individuals such as my brother and many more people who do not have a voice.
