Shut down Suncoast Primate Sanctuary and relocate animals to true sanctuaries
The Issue
For too long, primates at the Suncoast Primate Sanctuary in Palm Harbor, Florida, have been trapped behind concrete and metal under the guise of protection. While it calls itself a "sanctuary," this facility—formerly known as “Chimp Farm”—has a long and disturbing history of animal welfare violations, including a rare license revocation from the USDA. Now, years later, nothing has truly changed. The same patterns of neglect, poor conditions, and speciesist captivity continue—only with a more misleading name.
Recent USDA citations confirm what eyewitnesses and PETA have reported: primates are being held in unsafe enclosures, exposed to rusted fencing, cracked enrichment items, and soiled feeding tubes. Most heartbreaking are the animals themselves—chimpanzees, orangutans, baboons, and monkeys showing signs of psychological distress, rocking and shaking their cages in desperation.
Suncoast lacks the resources, space, and veterinary care required to meet the complex needs of these intelligent animals. Instead of giving them sanctuary, it keeps them confined in roadside-zoo conditions that fail them every single day.
This is not how sanctuaries operate. Real sanctuaries—like those accredited by the North American Primate Sanctuary Alliance (NAPSA)—offer expansive habitats, socialization, enrichment, and proper medical care. They honor the dignity of the animals they serve.
We call on the owners of Suncoast Primate Sanctuary to do what’s right: work with NAPSA to safely transfer all primates to accredited sanctuaries where they can heal, socialize, and live out their days with dignity. Enough is enough.
These animals have suffered long enough. It’s time to give them the life they were promised—and deserve.
Sign now to demand that Suncoast release these primates to real sanctuaries before more harm is done.
