Shut Down IXL

The Issue

IXL has truly become a source of stress and frustration for many students, including myself. Countless times, I've seen my classmates, as well as myself, in tears because of the anxiety and pressure this platform imposes on us. The promise of a learning tool that enhances our educational experience has turned into a nightmare that leaves students feeling overwhelmed and defeated.

IXL employs a reward system that is discouraging rather than encouraging; its "SmartScore" algorithm is unforgiving. One wrong answer after tirelessly working through several right ones can drastically reduce your score, undoing progress and crushing student morale. This system does not reflect a positive learning experience but rather a punitive measurement that equates to high-stakes testing on a daily basis.

According to numerous studies, positive reinforcement and manageable challenges are key to effective learning. Yet, IXL seems to ignore these fundamental principles by fostering an environment where constant pressure and fear of failure reign supreme. The tool often requires students to grind through repetitive problem sets that do not cater to individual learning speeds or styles, which further alienates and demotivates students who need more personalized attention.

Educational tools should enrich and support a student’s learning journey, not detract from it. The mental health of students is at risk, and we cannot sit idly by as young minds are subjected to such detrimental practices. Our educational systems need tools that are supportive, understanding, and truly beneficial for all students.

Join me in urging educators, school administrators, and policymakers to reconsider their endorsement and use of IXL. It’s time to prioritize the emotional and educational well-being of students. Please sign this petition to shut down IXL and pave the way for better, more effective learning tools that truly serve the needs of all students.
