My Great Aunt, a sharp and independent 80-year-old, was sent against her will to a facility called Care One in Beverly, Massachusetts. This has become a deeply personal issue for our family as we have come to learn about the terrible conditions and abuse that residents endure there. Despite her age, my aunt was able to rally the strength to reach out and leave that dreadful place. She carries with her undeniable proof of the mistreatment happening behind those closed doors.

Residents in Care One are among the most vulnerable in our society. Many are unable to advocate for themselves, making them targets for neglect and abuse. The situation is exacerbated by some family members who, motivated by ulterior financial gains, place their loved ones in such situations only to gain power of attorney over their finances.

Common issues reported include insufficient staff-to-patient ratios, inadequate medical care, and unsanitary living conditions. Sadly, these stories are far from rare and do not belong in a community known for its compassion and care.

The time has come for Care One to be held accountable. We must demand that healthcare facilities meet the ethical standards expected and deserve every individual's dignity and respect, especially at their most vulnerable. We urge the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to initiate a thorough investigation into Care One and take the necessary steps to protect current residents. If the reality is as grim as we have uncovered, shutting down this facility is not just warranted, but required to prevent further harm.
