Stop Demolition of Heritage Building in Kolkata

The Issue

A few years back the houses like 12, 13,13A & 13 B (all belonging to the Laha family of North Kolkata) just adjacent to the Sadharan Brahmo Samaj Mondir (211, Bidhan Sarani ) were all declared as heritage building by the Government but unfortunately due to some administrative lapses houses 12,13,13A were all demolished couple of years back and some different structures were erected on the same premises. Only the house 13 B was remaining till date but demolition process has been started here also. Records say that initial Maghutsob rehearsals and divine service prostutis used to be held in the house. Eminent personalities and intellectual luminaries like Dwrakanath Ganguly, Rabindranath Tagore, Vivekananda (Narendranath Dutta) ,Upendra Kishore Roy Chaudhuri,Sukumar Roy Chaudhuri,Surendranath Bandopadhyay, Prafulla Chandra Roy, Acharya Shib Nath Shastri, Aghornath Chattopadhyay and besides them many other outstanding intellectuals frequented this house. Vivekananda used to come for Maghutsob rehearsals in the same house. Upendra Kishore Roy Chaudhuri occasionally played his violin in the terrace and his son Sukumar Roy Chaudhuri played piano at times.Initially Brahmo Girls School was established in the same house which was later relocated opposite to Raja Bazar Science college. This house may be associated with Brahmo Samaj and its movements but it also does have some involvement with Bengal renaissance movement. People really cannot repudiate the contribution of Brahmo Samaj in Indian renaissance and enrichment of social culture devoid of all superstitions and prejudices. This house has been declared heritage building so this structure cannot be dismantled anyway. The government/administration may not in the know of this serious lapse. If these sort of things are nor not taken due care then it may be apprehended, one day very soon we might find that the Victoria Memorial or even Jorasanko Thakur Bari being given the same treatment.
In the circumstances this is a humble request to all my friends, well wishers and the Bengali community in general to cogitate deeply over the same and come forward to put pressure on the administrative authorities to desist from the non conservation of the heritage structures having historical importance.
