The buildings at the CEPT Campus are important examples of post-independence architecture in India. The campus as a whole is a very interesting exercise in site planning, climatic adaptation and landscaping. The significance of this work of architecture cannot be overestimated, and one can arguably claim that the Campus and the buildings should be considered amongst the most important works of architecture in the latter part of the twentieth century, not only within India but also at an international level.

The Campus has been the location of many important events in the history of education for architecture, planning, construction technology and interior design. It is a vitally important site in Ahmedabad’s cultural history.

Generations of students and faculty members have vivid and deep links to this campus. Visitors have carried back memories of this unique campus. Citizens of Ahmedabad have recognized the campus as a place that has unique qualities. In a sense, the campus now can no longer be considered to be in the private domain. It is a memorable Public Place,  important to Ahmedabad’s public memories, and important to all who are concerned with culture in India.

Keeping in mind the historical, architectural, environmental and public importance of the buildings in mind, we demand that CEPT University should not carry out the changes without careful, circumspect, respectful consideration of all aspects, and with only with due consultation with the architect, Shri B. V. Doshi.

We suggest that the following be done:

 1)    Consult the architect of the campus, Shree B.V.Doshi, whenever designs are being prepared for alterations or additions.

2)    Appoint a Committee (including Prof. Doshi and at least one independent reputed outside architect) responsible for ensuring the proper manner of designing and building all new works on the CEPT University Campus.  The Committee must also set out and publicly announce the norms to be followed for such work.

3)    CEPT University should let out larger new works by conducting Architectural Competitions, but must at least clearly set down the criteria and manner of appointing Master Planners and Architects for all works.

4)    All of the proceedings of the committee should be open to public scrutiny.
