Is it just me or you noticed the fact that most of the content in movies or web series are made to hurt Hindu sentiments. Entertainment industry is made to entertain people abiding to the rules and regulations. But In the long line of Bollywood films that have unwittingly “hurt religious sentiments”, the latest is 'Tandav' released on 15th Jan 2021 on Amazon Prime based on media and politics. Making fun in the name of Hindu Gods and Goddess, and portraying their character in a wrong way can not be tolerated by any Hindu Citizen. #BanOnTandav is trending on top in India which shows the true anger on these kind of contents and warn all the film makers to stop hurting the religious sentiments of any religion.

Bollywood should be careful while making movies or any OTT content or any documentary as it comes into the censorship.

The first area of concern in the M&E sector is Right to free speech and censorship. The freedom of communication and expression through mediums such as electronic media and published articles is a fundamental right under Article 19 of the Constitution of India. Article 19 guarantees freedom of speech as an integral aspect of each individual’s right to self- development but also applies some restriction.

In Article 19, Section 295-A of the Indian Penal Code criminalizes- Whoever, with deliberate and malicious intention of outraging the religious feelings of any class of citizens of India, by words, either spoken or written, or by signs or by visible representations or otherwise, insults or attempts to insult the religion or the religious beliefs of that class, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to three years, or with fine, or with both.

Various authoritative bodies like CBFC, I&B Ministry are imposing restrictions by censoring films to curtail creative freedom of speech and expression. Examples of such censored films include Udta Punjab, Lipstick under My Burkha, OMG, PK, A Suitable Boy etc. As Democracy is the most important feature in today’s world and an effective democracy requires free expression of opinion.
