Implement Dr.G.S Paramashivaiah committee report that seeks to irrigate the seven parched districts of Karnataka
The Issue
Dear Sir,
The Shashwatha Neeravari Horata Samithi (An organization to fight for Permanent water solution) is a voluntary organization for addressing the severe water scarcity in seven districts of Karnataka state, comprising the Balayaluseeme(dry) region — Kolar, Tumkur, Chikkaballapur, Ramanagara, parts of Mandya, Bangalore Rural and Bangalore Urban, in respect of acute shortage of drinking water for human beings & live stock in addition to the irrigation needs of the area.
The main thrust for such augmentation of water supply in these districts is due to excessive utilization of the ground water potential on account of scarce rainfall. In fact even with bore wells drilled up to 1500ft the water is not met with. This has led to many problems in the region like,
- High Fluoride content in drinking water, which is causing severe health issues.
- Farmers falling in a net of debts leading to the extreme step of suicide.
- Mass migration of rural population to urban looking for jobs.
It is in this back ground our Horata Samithi is addressing and requesting the various authorities to provide a permanent solution to the problem. In this context, bringing excessive rain water from the West flowing rivers to the dry and parched districts has been found to be a feasible proposal according to Irrigation expert G S Paramashivaiah Committee Report that seeks to irrigate the Bayaluseeme region.
The Paramashivaiah report suggests, “utilizing 3,000 tmcft of water that is now draining into the Arabian Sea, Even if 10 per cent of this water is utilized, nearly 26 lakh acres of land can be irrigated. The report says this can be done in an eco-friendly manner, without any irrigation dams. This will help revive and rejuvenate 18 tributaries, over 8,300 irrigation lakes, nine lakh bore wells and open wells. This will help the government garner nearly Rs. 26,000-crore revenue,”
Its high time to implement this project now else we would see a new desert framing around Bangalore in coming years. Hence we request you to kindly take necessary steps in this regard and implement the project with the coordination of state government of Karnataka.
