Rapid urbanisation and explosive vehicular population has lead to unreasonable road widenings in the city of Pune. We have witnessed hundreds of grand old trees being cut down to make way for wide roads without comprehensive consideration for the pedestrians and the surrounding environment. Such activities will never allow sustainable development of the city. No consideration is being paid to the root cause of the problem , which is,lack of an effective public transport system for a city growing so rapidly in all directions . Few years back, Ganeshkhind road had to lose all its old banyan trees on both the sides . This not being the solution, another blunder was created by the PMC authorities . Building of the flyover with a faulty design. The traffic problem is far from being solved to date. And now, to find quick relief, the valuable, native trees of which one is a 150 year old bayana tree, are put at stake. If our authorities continue to work with such lack of foresight and planning, how can we preserve this city for the future generations to come? In addition, this road widening will also lead to demolition of an old heritage structure within the University premises, The Police Station. Hence we strongly object to cutting down of these valuable trees. We need to save every bit of the green cover for ourselves and the future generations. It is high time the authorises took to putting the public transport services in place ,as a top priority and saved the health of the city and its citizens.
