Shorten the summer holidays, lengthen the Christmas holidays

Shorten the summer holidays, lengthen the Christmas holidays
The Issue
In recent years, the structure of school holidays has been a topic of increasing debate among parents, teachers, and policymakers. Many argue that the traditional academic calendar, especially the lengthy summer break, does not align with modern educational and societal needs. Re-evaluating and adjusting this calendar to better suit the needs of students and their families can lead to improved education.
Currently, summer holidays often extend to 6-7 weeks, depending on the region, which can lead to a significant academic regression known as the "summer slide." This phenomenon causes students to forget much of what they have learned during the school year, necessitating a period of review when school resumes. On the other hand, a longer Christmas holiday can foster family bonding during the most celebrated time of the year when many businesses close or reduce hours, allowing parents to spend more time at home.
Countries with shorter summer breaks and longer winter breaks have reported higher student engagement and performance levels. Moreover, aligning holidays with the natural rhythm of society, such as clustering more days off around major holiday seasons, can improve family time and reduce the need for expensive summer childcare.
We propose reducing the summer break to five weeks and extending the Christmas holiday to three weeks. This adjustment keeps the overall break duration consistent while distributing time off more effectively throughout the year. It considers educational research and social dynamics, promising a more balanced approach that benefits students, parents, teachers, and society at large.
Change is needed for an educational calendar that better serves all involved. Help us reach the government with this proposal by signing this petition.
