Shorten Periods on Tuesdays and Thursdays for Making Waves Academy upper school students
The Issue
We, the concerned students Making Waves Academy, are advocating for a change in our school schedule to shorten our 100 minute periods on Tuesdays and Thursdays . This adjustment will greatly benefit our academic performance, mental well-being, and overall productivity during these long school days.
1. Improved Focus and Retention:
Research has shown that extended periods of continuous learning can lead to decreased focus and reduced information retention among students (National Education Association). By shortening periods four through six on Tuesdays and Thursdays, we can ensure that students remain engaged throughout the day, leading to better comprehension of subject matter.
2. Enhanced Mental Health:
Long school days can have negative effects on the mental health of students. According to a study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, longer school hours are associated with increased stress levels among adolescents. By reducing the length of these specific periods twice a week, we can alleviate some of this stress and promote better mental well-being among Richmond students.
3. Increased Productivity:
Shortening periods four through six will allow us to make more efficient use of our time during those afternoons. With shorter classes, teachers will be able to cover essential material effectively while allowing for more focused individual or group work sessions. This adjustment will enable us to complete assignments promptly without compromising quality.
4. Balanced Extracurricular Participation:
Many Richmond students actively participate in extracurricular activities such as sports or clubs after school hours (Richmond Unified School District data). By shortening these specific periods twice a week, we create an opportunity for better balance between academics and extracurricular commitments without sacrificing either.
5. Supportive Learning Environment:
A shorter period schedule promotes a positive learning environment by reducing fatigue levels among both teachers and students (American Psychological Association). With refreshed minds during these periods, teachers can deliver engaging lessons, and students can actively participate in discussions and activities.
We kindly request the Richmond Unified School District to consider implementing this change to our school schedule. By shortening periods four through six on Tuesdays and Thursdays, we will create a more conducive learning environment that supports our academic success, mental well-being, and overall productivity.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. Together, let's strive for an educational system that prioritizes the holistic development of Richmond's students.
Sincerely,
[Tlaloc Wallace (23rd Wave)]
