Our goal with this petition is to have the lights at the Shoreview skate park stay on until 11:30 pm with a warning light before 5 minutes shutting off. As you may know, the lights at the Shoreview skatepark are only on till 9:45, and they shut off with no warning signal, which can be very dangerous if someone is attempting a risky trick. There have been countless times where people are about to try a trick and the lights suddenly shut off without warning, and they have to bail because they are unable to see. Keeping the lights on longer can contribute to keeping skateboarders safe from injury, and it would allow skaters with later schedules to practice their sport if their daytime schedule does not permit it.
Skateboarding and outdoor actives has shown to improve mental and emotional health. Many people use skating to cope with their hectic lives, and having longer hours will give people a healthy way to express those emotions. Also, leaving the lights longer can potentially reduce crime by providing teens and young adults something positive to do with their time at night. The Shoreview skatepark creates a positive space where people who share the same interest can intermingle, and by signing this petition, you agree that the lights should be left on till 11:30 pm with a warning light before shutting off.
