Shift Perceptions About Social Changes in Technological Evolution
The Issue
I am deeply vested in the future of the next generation. The world we are leaving for our children and our children’s children is fundamentally changing with technology at its core. The way we learn, connect, work, and even think is heavily influenced by technology, much to the apprehension of many. I ask for your empathy in understanding and participating in this transition, as it is neither the first nor will it be the last societal shift. Indeed, history has taught us that change is constant, and yet, humankind has persevered, adapted, grown.
But we cannot simply proceed without inspection of the values we carry with us into the future. There appears to be a wave of fear and resistance, a reluctance to accept the social changes with the technological evolution. Our perspective must shift from viewing social change as a menace to recognizing it as a sign of growth and learning. With this petition, I hope to create room for dialogue, education, and betterment.
A Scandinavian study from Brink (2019) supports my argument. It demonstrated that those who were most skeptical of new technologies also reported the highest levels of fear and anxiety when confronted with change. Changing our perspective on these matters can stimulate the much-needed discourse on ethical, societal, and environmental implications, thus paving the way for a more harmonious adaptation to our changing world.
Let us not fear the new, but embrace and guide it so that what we pass on to the next generation is a world that, though different from our own, is neither feared nor rejected, but rather understood and accepted. Please sign this petition to join the movement to shift perceptions about social changes in our technological evolution.
