Private prisons claim to be more cost effective but in order to be profitable they have to keep people incarcerated. As a matter of fact, the more people incarcerated the more profitable the prison becomes. For this reason, private prisons are lobbying for tougher laws and stiffer sentencing. Not for the best interest of the public but for profit
