Require body cameras for Pinellas County Sheriffs officers.

The Issue

As of June 2020, Pinellas County Sheriffs Officers are not required to wear body cameras.  Body Cameras give officers the accountability that should be required to protect and serve. Law enforcement officers must be held to a higher standard, and show restraint when dealing with the public. Body cameras are an effective way to ensure that officers take these steps while interacting with the public. Body Cameras allow for a transparency between law enforcement officials and the general public that simply does not exist otherwise. The 2019-2020 adopted budget for PCSO is $315,458,040. Of that, $161,216,490 is allocated to law enforcement. To continue to fund PCSO in the amount of over $300 million dollars, while not requiring them to wear, and use body cameras is irresponsible.
