Please sign this petition in support of allowing chickens (hens) to be raised and kept in Shelby Twp, MI. 

Sustainable living is becoming a way of life and domestic raising of chickens for eggs and meat play a vital role in this. Local food production is becoming even more important due to the Covid 19 climate.

Chickens are great animals to keep for the following reasons:

1. Control bugs and weeds
2. Natural food providers
3. Provide natural fertilizer 
4. Lower food waste by consuming scraps
5. Help teach children to care for animals and where food comes from
6. Help promote sustainable food system

Many communities similar to and surrounding Shelby Twp in the Metro Detroit area allow the raising and homing of chickens. Shelby Twp prides itself on being a sustainable and thoughtful community, allowing residents to keep chickens will further this effort.

Our goal is to eliminate the ordinance that excludes residents from keeping chickens with a reasonable limit in place.

It should also be noted that this will not include the keeping of Roosters due to the close proximity of homes in the area.
