Mortimer Road Safety Campaign

Mortimer Road Safety Campaign
The Issue
Mortimer Road, which lies between the A616 and A57, is an unclassified road and appears to be like a small country lane. However it is a much used short cut into western Sheffield and since its resurfacing for the Tour de Yorkshire, traffic sometimes travels at fast speeds, well over 60mph. There are multiple accidents on this road, often from drivers not noticing the many hairpin bends in time and in winter time they become more frequent.
As the road is a gateway to the moors, it is frequented by walkers, bikers and horse riders who are at risk from speeding vehicles. There are many tractors and agricultural vehicles. We are seeking urgent road safety improvements from Sheffield City Council. These changes are needed to avoid injuries and possibly fatalities on this dangerous stretch of road.
Our proposal:
1. 50mph speed limit to be implemented all along the road as per most of the roads in the Peak District National Park
2. More chevron warning signs to indicate sharp bends
3. The reduced speed limit to be enforced with speed cameras*
4. The 30mph speed limit in the village of Midhopestones to start at the top of the hill above the village and not half way down.
*Surveillance cameras would be beneficial in helping with escalating rural crime
