Build a cycle lane from Sheffield city centre to the Northern Hospital

The Issue

The Northern General Hospital is one of the largest employers in the city. There is currently no provision of a safe, continuous and direct cycle lane from the city centre to the Hospital. The roads between the city and the hospital (Burngreave Road and Pitsmoor Road) are busy at peak times; this lack of provision causes congestion and represents a safety hazard, with multiple previous accidents involving cyclists and cars.

The latest incident occurred on Tuesday 6th April, when Dr X, an Infection Specialist was hit by a delivery van on Burngreave road whilst on his daily commute home. He sustained life-threatening injuries and is currently unable to work. Had there been a safe, continuous and direct cycle lane between the hospital and the city centre, this accident and many others may have been avoided. Many people do not want to take the risk of cycling on these dangerous roads and are put off cycling to work as a result, contributing towards congestion and air pollution.

The council are currently investing in cycle infrastructure in the city, but improvements in cycle provision to the Northern General Hospital are not on in the plans. This is a major omission given that approx. 7000 individuals work on the Northern site.

We urge the council to invest in a safe, continuous and direct cycle lane between the Northern General Hospital and Sheffield city centre, up Pitsmoor or Burngreave road.
