She Was Thrown Away Like Trash. Justice for Apple the dog.

She Was Thrown Away Like Trash. Justice for Apple the dog.
The Issue
A helpless senior dog was treated like garbage.
In early February 2026, a disabled and severely malnourished Yorkshire terrier named Apple was found alive in the trash of a Washington, D.C. apartment building after being thrown down a garbage chute. Apple is a senior dog with injuries to her lower back, hips, and knees, and she can only walk using her front legs. When she was rescued, she was described as “skin and bones,” suffering from extreme neglect.
Apple survived only because a resident discovered her and contacted authorities. She is now in the care of Miri’s Haven Senior Dog Rescue, where she is receiving medical treatment, safety, and compassion. Despite everything she has endured, rescuers say her tail hasn’t stopped wagging.
This was not an accident. Throwing a living animal down a trash chute is an act of deliberate, extreme cruelty. It is the kind of violence that cannot be dismissed as neglect, misunderstanding, or lack of resources. Acts like this demand accountability.
At this time, it is unclear whether the person responsible will face consequences. That uncertainty is unacceptable. When cruelty this severe goes uninvestigated or unpunished, it sends a dangerous message that the most vulnerable lives do not matter.
This petition calls on the Metropolitan Police Department, D.C. Animal Care and Control, and the Office of the D.C. Attorney General to fully investigate what happened to Apple, identify the person responsible, and pursue appropriate charges under District law. Justice for Apple is not about revenge. It is about affirming that intentional violence against animals will not be tolerated in our community.
Senior and disabled animals depend entirely on humans for their safety. When that trust is betrayed in such a horrific way, the response must be clear, swift, and firm. Accountability protects not only animals, but the values of empathy and responsibility that keep communities safe.
Apple’s survival is a miracle. What happened to her should never happen again.
Sign this petition to demand justice for Apple and to ensure that extreme acts of animal cruelty in Washington, D.C. are treated with the seriousness they deserve.
