End Scared Straight Programs
My knowledge of history helps me to believe that the ‘Scared Straight’ programs do more harm than good.
On June 25th, 2012, the TV show ‘Beyond Scared Straight’ was canceled due to unknown circumstances, but the program does not. In the late 1970s, a 14-year-old boy was raped by inmates during a Scared straight prison tour. The inmates are not allowed to put a hand on the kid’s but sometimes the people aren’t paying attention so it is possible for things to happen without their knowledge. Studies show that the scared straight programs are counterproductive and do more harm than good. The program is not safe and puts kids and teens in harmful environments and bad situations.
During another tour, a ferocious killer (an inmate) dragged from a teen talk because he attacked an at-risk kid who refused to comb another inmate’s chest hair. There have been many cases where the teens have been hurt or attacked during a scared straight session/prison tour.
This shows that Scared Straight and other programs similar to this do more harm than good, are dangerous, harmful, and put kids in bad environments. The purpose of these programs is to help kids get back on their feet, straighten up their attitudes and behavior, and become an overall better person, but they fail to do so. As much as they are helping kids and teens, they are harming even more. All of these programs should be put to an end.
