I am a student in Guilford County Schools, in North Carolina, who has already taken the Sex Education course provided. In that class, I noticed that there wasn't much information regarding students who are LGBTQ+, nor much information on contraceptives and diseases. While taking the short class, what we had learned was very basic information about sexual organs, basic changes that can happen during puberty, and minimal details about STDs. I was shocked when I was able to learn more about sex education from "Big Mouth" on Netflix, than I had did when I took the class! This class had also had some of its time taken up to explain the dangers of drugs, so instead of taking the full course length to only teach sex education. Though I believe it is good to learn about drugs and health risks affiliated with it, I don't understand why there wasn't a separate class for it. Hopefully with enough support, there can be a change in how sex education in Guilford County public schools is taught. Education should be reliable, especially when it comes to sex education, since having reliable information can protect someone's health! Even if there are small changes that are made for the better, students will be able for further understand contraceptives, what is happening inside of their own bodies, and what hormonal changes they could go through (whether on hormonal pills or not).
