The Issue
OUR GOAL: Install shade to the Heardmont Park playground in Shelby County
Just one blistering sunburn during childhood or adolescence can nearly double a person’s risk of developing melanoma (the deadliest form of skin cancer) later in life.
Heardmont Park in Shelby County is a cherished community space where families gather, children play, and memories are made. However, the current state of the playground presents a significant concern for families, particularly during the hot summer months. The playground lacks sufficient shade, exposing children and their caretakers to prolonged heat and direct sunlight.
Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays can lead to serious health issues such as skin cancer, sunburns, and heat exhaustion, especially in young children whose skin is more sensitive. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children should be provided with environments that minimize exposure to these harmful elements.
Moreover, the intense heat discourages use of the playground during daylight hours, limiting recreational opportunities for children to play, socialise, and engage in physical activities essential for their wellbeing.
We propose the installation of shade structures over the existing playground equipment at Heardmont Park. These could be in the form of canopies, sail shades, or strategically planted trees that provide natural shelter. Such installations would not only protect our children but also make the playground more inviting, allowing for its usage throughout the day without the risks associated with sun exposure.
We urge the Shelby County Parks and Recreation Department to prioritize this initiative as it directly impacts the health and wellbeing of our community's families. By making this necessary improvement, Heardmont Park will enhance its reputation as a safe, family-friendly environment.
