Shade for Students: Petition for a Covered Bus Stop Near Sheldon & Smedberg.

The Issue

The students at Sheldon High and Smedberg Middle School are the ones most affected by the bus stop situation. Every day, we stand there waiting for the bus, exposed to all kinds of weather. There’s no cover, so when it rains, we get soaked. Our clothes get ruined, and we risk getting sick. When it’s hot, it feels like the sun is burning us alive, and we’re forced to sit there, sweating for what feels like forever. It’s not just one or two of us—there are a lot of students who deal with this every single day. And honestly, it’s taking a toll on everyone, from the ones who get sick from standing in the rain, to those who can’t handle the heat. It’s frustrating, and it shouldn’t be this way.

If nothing changes, things are just gonna keep getting worse. We’ll keep having to stand out there, exposed to the elements, putting our health and comfort on the line. Every time it rains, we risk getting sick. Every time the temperature climbs over 100°F, we risk heat exhaustion. If we don’t take action, this will just keep happening, and no one is going to be comfortable or safe. But if something changes—if we get that shade structure—it’s gonna make a huge difference. No more standing in the rain. No more feeling like we’re baking under the sun. With the proper shelter, we could actually wait for the bus in a safe and comfortable way, which would make the whole experience less of a burden for every student who uses that stop.

Now is the time to act because we can’t keep waiting for things to get better on their own. We’ve been dealing with this for too long, and the risk of health problems is getting higher. The weather isn’t getting any better, and it’s not like the city is going to magically fix it without us speaking up. If we act now, we show that we care about our well-being and that we’re not just gonna accept things the way they are. The sooner we start pushing for a change, the sooner we can make that bus stop a safer and more comfortable place for everyone who has to use it. We’ve dealt with this long enough, and it’s time for a change.
