The more than 700,000 individuals who ride San Francisco's transit system daily, find themselves putting their safety at risk every time they step aboard one of SF's trains and busses. Attending high school across the city, I’ve been forced to become an avid rider of San Francisco’s trains and busses throughout my 4 years at Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory in San Francisco’s Cathedral Hill. My daily adventures consisting of a ride on one of the underground trains and then either the 47 or 49 up Van Ness, never fail to keep me on high alert as of what next crazy event will occur before my eyes. More so on the above-ground busses, I’ve witnessed fights between passengers in a quantity close to reaching double digits at this point. When these scuffles break out, the fear amongst the surrounding passengers is tangible, simply not knowing how badly it would escalate. It has gotten to the point where my friends and I expect these individuals to enter the trains with no other purpose than to cause mayhem. While SFMTA may not feel that improvements are urgent, they truly are. With the underground system being closed indefinitely, SFMTA should take advantage of this opportunity to increase their spendings, and make a visible effort to increase passenger safety with Ideas such as implementing greater security measures, including a greater quantity of guards and cameras to monitoring the lines with much more caution, as well as (as opposed to turning a blind eye to the situation) removing homeless people from the transportation vehicles were presented to them, all in the hopes of creating a much safer environment for people who are looking to reach their destination without the worry of witnessing chaos
