The Issue

As a musician based in Edinburgh, I frequently have to play in the city centre, carrying various pieces of equipment as well as my instrument, which means navigating the challenges of city centre parking every time I have a gig or an event. My income from playing, which should support my passion for music and sustain my living, often falls prey to the exorbitant parking fees that seem to rise without reason. How can musicians like me, along with countless others who depend on city access, continue to thrive in our professions when so much is being siphoned off by parking expenses?

Parking fees in city centres have been escalating at an alarming rate, affecting not just artists but all citizens. For many, the escalating cost of parking translates into making hard financial choices. The burden of these charges is heavy on local workers, small business owners, and visitors, eroding their experience and discouraging regular visits.

There is no compelling evidence that these hikes contribute positively to the community. On the contrary, these price increases could potentially drive visitors away, reduce local spending, and harm small businesses. Local councils and governments often argue these fees are necessary for urban development and maintenance. Still, they provide little transparency on how these funds are being effectively utilized to benefit the community directly.

We're calling on the Scottish Government to take a stand! By setting a maximum parking fee of £4 per hour on our streets, we'll be striking a balance that sustains urban growth while making city access equitable for everyone. This cap could help maintain the vibrancy and attractiveness of city centres, ensuring they remain accessible and welcoming.

Together, let's encourage sensible changes that support everyone who depends on the city for their livelihood and enjoyment. Sign this petition to urge the Scottish Government to introduce a £4 per hour cap on city centre parking fees, making the city a more inclusive and vibrant place for all.
