As the coronavirus cases rise in the Rio Grande Valley new problems arise in 2020-2021 school year. Students and teachers in South Texas face going back to campus unprepared and unprotected in just under 2 months. We are asking Greg Abbot to help our community leaders make good choices for the students, teachers, and staff members ultimate health. The Rio Grande Valley was seen all over the nation in the most well known media sources across the United States: as a Hot Spot for COVID-19 Cases. School is about to start and school districts have confirmed sending students and teachers back into the classrooms. This can become a sad, horror, and sorrowful story for the RGV. The Rio Grande Valley contains 21 School District all within a 60-90 mile radius. The Rio Grande Valley is also the #3 in all Texas as hot spots with COVID-19. Can you imagine, being inside a closed environment for 8 hours where there is 1000s of students, teachers, and staff members all inside at the same time. Then having the students and teachers going back to their families. Ten out of twelve hospitals in the Rio Grande Valley are now at full capacity. Greg Abbott we need your help! You have also mandated masks but they are not required for children under 10. Which puts teachers at risk. What about our immune compromised students and teachers? Who is thinking about keeping them safe? 

This is why we must act to protect our students and school staff. The students or staff shouldn’t be required to go back on campus until cases start to die down. With flu season coming back around , this fall is scheduled to be the deadliest season yet. This is why we, as a community, need to petition against Greg Abbott and the TEA commissioner as well as school district board members around the Rio Grande Valley. This is not safe. 

As a teacher myself, I am not only thinking about my precious students but my father who is also a school teacher as well.  Imagine a student catching the virus at school and then bringing it back home to his grandparents or parents whom they live with and they don’t make it. This is our heartbreaking reality. I understand that school is a safe place for students and would be ideal for the students to go back but this is a pandemic. Unfortunately, times are not how they used to be. I am not saying to never return to school but to give the coronavirus cases time to go down before beginning on campus school. It could possibly be in September, October, November. However, August is not the time for the Rio Grande Valley to suffer additional COVID-19 cases at school, home, and at the hospitals.

A medida que aumentan los casos de coronavirus en el Valle del Río Grande, surgen nuevos problemas en el año escolar 2020-2021. Los estudiantes y maestros en el sur de Texas se enfrentan a regresar al campus sin preparación y sin protección en menos de 2 meses. Como maestra, no solo estoy pensando en mis preciosos estudiantes sino también en mi padre que es maestros de escuela. Imagínese a un estudiante contagiando el virus en la escuela y luego llevándolo a sus abuelos o padres con quienes viven y no logran vivir. Esta es nuestra triste realidad. Entiendo que la escuela es un lugar seguro para los estudiantes y sería ideal para que los estudiantes regresen, pero esto es una pandemia. Desafortunadamente, los tiempos no son como solían ser. No estoy diciendo que nunca regrese a la escuela, sino que les dé tiempo a los casos de coronavirus para que bajen antes de comenzar en la escuela del campus. Posiblemente podría ser en septiembre, octubre, noviembre. Sin embargo, agosto no es el momento para que nuestras ciudades continúen sufriendo y tolerando casos adicionales de COVID-19 en las escuelas, casas y hospitales.
