Separate Background Actor and Stand-in Categories in SAG-AFTRA

Separate Background Actor and Stand-in Categories in SAG-AFTRA
The Issue
As a passionate advocate for the rights and recognition of stand-ins and background actors, I am launching this petition to urge SAG-AFTRA to acknowledge the distinct nature of these two roles by creating separate categories within the union. Stand-ins and background actors perform vastly different tasks on set, requiring unique skills, and responsibilities. It is time for SAG-AFTRA to grant them the respect they deserve.
A background actor is used on camera in the scenes. They work solely with the AD staff and are directed where to cross and how to act during filming. A stand-in is used during set-ups for lighting and camera blocking before filming. They are two completely different jobs.
Separating the two categories would benefit negotiations with the AMPTP for stand-ins having to do double duty which deserves two paychecks. If a stand-in is asked to do background acting in the same scene, they can't perform as well at their job. Stand-ins are used during camera and lighting set-ups to help the crew get the shot ready for their actors. Part of a stand-in’s job is to watch the takes during filming in order to see if their actor made any changes because they represent the actor during set-ups. The Director of Photography, Camera Operators, and Assistant Directors expect the stand-in to come back to the next set-up, knowing exactly what their actor did. This is impossible when a stand-in is also doing a separate job as a background actor in the scene and can not watch what their actor does. So, they get in trouble.
Also, there are no breaks for a stand-in doing double duty.
Stand-ins are currently a part of the union background count and separating the categories would also open more spots up for union background.
By separating these two categories within SAG-AFTRA's framework, we can address several pressing issues faced by both groups more effectively:
It is crucial for SAG-AFTRA to recognize the importance of separating stand-ins and background actors into distinct categories. This change will not only provide them with the respect they deserve but also empower them during contract negotiations by acknowledging their individual contributions on set.
It is time we are finally heard.
Join me in signing this petition to urge SAG-AFTRA to take immediate action towards creating separate categories for stand-ins and background actors within its framework. Together, we can pave the way for a more equitable and respectful industry that values every member's unique talents and responsibilities.
