Sentenced to 5 years in prison for having sex with five consenting adults.

The Issue

In August 2012, Brittni Colleps, mother of three small children, was sentenced to 5 years in prison for having sex with five consenting adults.

The fact that these adults were students at the high school where Colleps taught apparently aroused the ire of Tarrant County prosecutors, who charged her with having an "inappropriate relationship" with students. She was sentenced to 5 years in prison.

One of the many inappropriate things about this case is that she was even arrested in the first place. Legislating sex between consenting adults is extreme to say the least, and sentencing someone to 5 years in prison for being ‘inappropriate’ is barbaric.

The men involved (all of whom were between the ages of 18 and 20) who testified and/or made statements to the press, unanimously agreed that Ms. Colleps had done nothing wrong. So who were the victims?

If there were no victims, there certainly are now. Ms. Colleps’ three young children are growing up without their mother. Brittni’s husband Christopher Colleps, in a tearful moment on the witness stand, stated, “This is between me and her.” He’ll be raising his children on his own.

Something needs to be done.

Governor Perry, please, please issue a pardon for Ms. Colleps. It is the right thing to do.
