During football games, students and parents watch a non-native student running around in traditional garment. Not only is this insensitive but very offensive. Cultural appropriation is defined as "the unacknowledged or inappropriate adoption of the customs, practices, ideas, etc. of one people or society by members of another and typically more dominant people or society". This can be deemed offensive because, again, you re stealing one's culture and making a mockery of it. As well as teaching your students that Christopher Columbus was a good man who discovered America however our indigenous people were already here. They were raped and murdered on their own land and it has never stopped.

Indigenous people in this country are also being murdered and facing many injustices. More than 5000 cases of missing/murdered indigenous women and girls have been documented in both the U.S and Canada. 35% of them are women under 21 and 27% of them were girls under 18. Their land is being stolen from them while their women are being assaulted and murdered. It's time to take accountability of your blatantly racist mascot and fix it. Be the change you want to see.
