Send the Inspector General to investigate the actions of the Berkeley County School Board!

The Issue

Clergy, teachers, former educators, parents, community leaders, democrats, republicans and concerned citizens in Berkeley County are making a public appeal to Governor McMaster to intervene with the Inspector General.  Investigate the actions of the newly elected BCSD school board. According to SC Code of Laws Section 59-19-315 (Commencement of trustee’s term of office), “The term of office of every elected trustee of a school district must commence one week following the certification of his election.”  In Bill S910, introduced by State Senator Larry Grooms and responsible for shortening the four year terms of school board members elected in 2020, it is stated that, “Notwithstanding any other provision of law, members shall take office at the first meeting of the board following certification of the election.”

Given the law referenced, the meeting held with new board members on Tuesday, November 15, 2022 was not in accordance with South Carolina state law and therefore all actions should be deemed illegal.  Public education is a core of our society and we need the Governor to help us restore the public trust!  In addition, there is uncertainty in our schools and that is not an optimal environment for learning or working.  Our students, teachers, staff and administrators need the voices of their citizens to help in this crisis.
