Send PolyMet to Summer School
Send PolyMet to Summer School
The Issue
PolyMet needs to do its homework. The Environmental Protection Agency recently gave the company's mine proposal in northeastern Minnesota a failing grade.
As proposed, the mine will cause water pollution for up to 2,000 years, represent the largest destruction of wetlands ever permitted in Minnesota, potentially contaminate drinking water with dangerous metals and chemicals, destroy fish and wildlife habitat, put taxpayers at risk of paying for clean-up, and result in many other severe and unacceptable impacts.
In addition, the review itself is incomplete. Impacts to water quality from the mine will probably be far greater than predicted in the document. The draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) fails to provide sufficient information to assess these and other impacts of the mine.
The company and the responsible government agencies need to bring this project up to the standards required by law to protect Minnesota's clean water and other natural resources. They should take this summer-or as long as necessary-to do the additional work necessary.
