Support House Bill 988. We need to regulate fireworks again.
The Issue
I am a chronically ill disabled mother living in Sellersville PA. Over the last 2 years people in this neighborhood and many others across the state have been discharging fireworks at all hours of the night and any given day of the week.
Personally this effects me because I live in constant pain and loud unexpected noises cause me to tense up. When I tense up my pain levels shoot through the roof and can last for hours. I often don't sleep when this happens as well. Others have voiced that babies are being woken up, adults have been woken up, animals have been terrified to the point of death in some cases, people have been hit with fireworks, and sparks have fallen near residences. One person reported that their dog is terrified to the point that it will not go outside to potty and then has accidents inside for a week following unexpected firework blasts. Another reported that their dog died 2 years ago due to a heart attack because a neighbor shot off fireworks almost daily. There have been reports of baby sheep being seperated from their mothers and trampled to death as the sheep are panicked by the noise. People are having to give their dogs medications and take them into basements just because some people are being inconsiderate.
We each have a right to have peace in our own homes. By changing the laws on fireworks people won't have to have panicked animals, irritable babies, interrupted sleep, high pain levels or PTSD episodes, or fear for their safety. Police can not enforce borough rules unless they catch people in the act of discharging the fireworks. I propose that the law be changed to only allow fireworks to be purchased and discharged on holidays to allow people who wish to use fireworks the ability to do so but let the rest of us be prepared. Or if that will not work even going back to banning the larger and louder fireworks.
I hope to see many support this as it effects a lot of people in our communities.
