Protect all the wetlands in the lower area of Coindre Hall Park. Amend the wetlands Map
The Issue
Coindre Hall Park is known for its spectacular iconic views of Huntington Harbor through wetlands plantings swaying in the breeze in the lower area of the property. Dragonflies in the summer, mallard ducks swim out from wetland plantings after heavy rain as walking paths convert into ponds a constantly changing landscape. Priceless beauty they are wetlands of unusual local importance' (ULI).
This area is not protected and can be BULLDOZED part of it was already cleared crushing turtles' eggs and that was on the protected part of the wetlands. Suffolk county was found to be out of compliance. There are currently NO regulations governing the rest of the wetlands because it is not on the Suffolk County wetlands map! Only the freshwater pond is on the wetlands map and protected. The Department of environmental conservation( D.E.C) has jurisdiction to protect 100ft from the edge of the Freshwater pond.
In order for the D.E.C to protect the remaining wetlands, it must be on Suffolk County wetlands map. We request the D.E.C amend the Suffolk County wetlands map to include the remaining lower area of Coindre Hall urgently. We the community feel that Coindre hall Park is a wetland of unusual local importance' (ULI) and as such must be added to the Suffolk county wetland map as a matter of urgency.
Only recently has the importance of wetlands in densely populated urban areas been recognized. For its ability to store carbon, reduce runoff, clean the water entering the harbor.
Huntington has become so developed what legacy are we leaving the next generation? We cannot get back the wetlands we have lost, we can work to preserve and protect what’s left.
Protect this iconic park of Huntington now we request the lower part of Coindre Hall is added to the Suffolk county Wetlands map.
