Repeal Horseracing in California

Repeal Horseracing in California
The Issue
Horseracing is a cruel and outdated "sport" that has seen 21 horses killed so far in California in 2020, and we are only 2 months into the year. We are calling on the state of California to repeal the law that authorizes horseracing licenses.
Demand for horseracing has been consistently dropping across the country over the last decade, and the precious real estate used for California’s horseracing tracks could be put to far better and more valuable use as public space or housing.
We have a unique opportunity now, as the state of California moves toward legalizing betting on human sports, to also change the law to repeal horseracing licenses — and we must take it with both hands.
Horseracing is cruel and deadly. Well over 2,000 horses are killed racing or training across America every single year. In California alone, 5,000 horses have perished since 1998.
California has long been the conscience of America, a progressive leader on a host of ethical issues, including those affecting animals. Just recently, the state became the first in the nation to ban fur, and the third to prohibit wild-animal acts in circuses.
Ending the abuse and killing of horses for $2 bets will move that needle again, and – in a win-win – by coupling it with the advent of Sports Betting, our great state will actually enjoy an economic boon.
