Senate Votes More Money for War: Respond to your Senators

The Issue

The House of Representatives approved tens of billions of dollars in additional funding for wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, including more funding for the unmanned drones and airstrikes that are killing civilians. More troops won't bring more peace. Every year for the past four years the United States has increased the number of military troops in Afghanistan and the violence has gotten worse.

Your calls and emails, however, are beginning to persuade members of Congress to challenge the U.S. war strategy in that country. Before voting to approve the war supplemental, the House added conditions that:

*Re-affirm the ban on permanent U.S. military bases in Iraq;

*Ban permanent U.S. military bases in Afghanistan; and

*Support President Obama's due dates for withdrawal of all U.S. troops from Iraq by December 31, 2011.

Write your representative about his or her vote last week. Say thank you if he or she voted against the legislation, and express your disappointment if he or she voted in favor.

Mary AcostaPetition StarterI voted as a Democrate but I would love to see a third party come to fruition. After 5 years of working for the schools, lay offs have left me unemployed. Who got the bail out? Not the working families of America. So, now maybe people will get out and take a look at the status quo and what it has done to the poor. Also, there must be health care for all and justice for all. http://www.democracynow.org/2011/4/11/dont_punish_the_poor_economist_jeffrey
