This issue is deeply personal to me. I know many people who have loved ones incarcerated, and they live in constant fear for their safety. An inmate serving a life sentence has nothing to lose, and when such inmates are housed with others, it creates an environment of heightened risk. Other inmates may be forced into situations where they must defend themselves, which can result in additional time added to their sentences.

The current system is not just unfair; it's dangerous. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, violence in prisons has been on the rise over the past decade (Bureau of Justice Statistics). Much of this violence can be attributed to the tension that arises from housing lifers with general population inmates.

We need a change in policy that ensures those serving life sentences are segregated from other prisoners. This would not only protect other inmates but also contribute towards a safer and more controlled prison environment overall.
