SEEKING JUSTICE FOR RG KAR – SEATTLE, USA
The Issue
INCIDENT
On 9 August 2024, a second-year postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, West Bengal, India was found dead in a seminar hall on the college campus. She was last seen at the seminar hall at 2 am where she went to rest during a 36-hour shift. An autopsy later confirmed that she had been brutally raped, tortured and murdered. The incident has elevated serious concern and debate about the safety of women and doctors in India, and has sparked significant outrage, nationwide and global protests, and demands for a thorough investigation followed by punishment of everyone involved and responsible.
BACKGROUND
The Indian and Bengali community of Greater Seattle area stands in solidarity with the deceased, family of the deceased, the doctors including Junior and Student doctors, and everyone across India who are looking for a justice. A meeting was held by the Bengali Community on August 18, 2024, from 5-7pm at Crossroads Park, Bellevue to let people express their solidarity through various recitations, songs and a walk within the park. The meeting participants agreed to the following petition.
PETITION
- We want timely justice for the crime committed in R.G. Kar incident and all the guilty perpetrators associated with this crime directly or indirectly must be punished in an exemplary manner in accordance with the laws of India.
- Discuss the incident in the Joint Sessions of the Parliament and enact new laws to ensure safety of doctors and of all women at their workplaces as necessary.
