Seeking efficient waste management & the remediation of Mavallipura landfill in Bangalore
The Issue
The Mavallipura landfill issue is a highly contentious and complex problem that has been affecting the health and wellbeing of the local population for many years. The landfill is located in the outskirts of Bangalore, India, and was used as a dumping yard until 2012, by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the city's municipal corporation. The landfill used to receive around 500 tonnes of waste per day, which has been accumulating since the landfill's inception. The landfill is also situated close to several residential areas, resulting in the local population being exposed to harmful pollutants and toxic chemicals. Although the landfill has been closed since July 11, 2012, its crippling effects on the surrounding ecological and locals' livelihoods remain. The current situation in Bangalore demands Remediation of the Mavallipura landfill and urgent action against other landfills in the city. The environmental and health impacts of these landfills have reached critical levels, and it is essential that the government takes immediate and effective action to address the waste management crisis and mitigate its impacts on the environment and the local population.
