Seek Justice for Dr. Ban Ziad Tareq by Reinvestigating Her Death

The Issue

The tragic death of Dr. Ban Ziad Tareq on August 4, 2025, in Basra has left a cloud of mystery and a serious gap in justice that must be addressed. Declared as a suicide, the case was closed without a thorough investigation, leaving several critical procedures incomplete. This lack of due diligence not only undermines trust in the justice system but also disregards the possibility of foul play—a concern echoed by many in society.

The forensic medical report, which should have been a cornerstone of the investigation, was never completed. Witness testimonies remained uncollected, and individuals who may have had motives to harm Dr. Tareq were neither interrogated nor detained. These oversights call into question the integrity and accuracy of the initial ruling, suggesting that the conclusion of suicide may have been premature or even incorrect.

Taking into consideration the gravity of the situation and the public interest in this matter, it is imperative to reopen and conduct a fresh, unbiased investigation. The Iraqi Parliament acknowledged these discrepancies but failed to initiate a follow-up, leaving the public without answers or clarity.

We urge the relevant authorities to prioritize transparency and justice over procedural expediency. A reinvestigation into Dr. Ban Ziad Tareq’s death will ensure accountability and the revelation of truth, whatever it may be. The pursuit of justice in this case could restore public confidence in the legal system and potentially uncover systemic issues hindering justice in Iraq.

Why it is not suicide

Colleagues affirmed that Dr. Ban showed no signs of depression and was actively planning her future.

A fellow doctor pointed out that someone intending suicide would normally choose a simpler method (e.g., medication), not deep and excruciating self-inflicted wounds down to the bone.

The preliminary report revealed severe longitudinal cuts on both hands reaching the bone, bruises on the neck and face, and bloodstains on clothing—findings inconsistent with typical suicide cases.

Surveillance cameras in the area were reportedly disabled before, during, and after the incident, raising serious suspicions.

Forensic experts in Kirkuk concluded that the wounds were not “vital,” meaning they may have occurred postmortem, suggesting homicide rather than suicide.

It is our collective responsibility to stand for truth and justice, not only for Dr. Tareq but for all who seek assurance in the fairness of legal procedures. Please sign this petition to advocate for a new, comprehensive investigation into the untimely and suspicious death of Dr. Ban Ziad Tareq.
