We believe that Chauvin, who was sentenced to 22.5 years in prison for the death of George Floyd, has been used as a scapegoat in a highly politically-charged case. It is our belief that the complexities surrounding the case extend beyond an easy blame scenario and Chauvin deserves a second look at his situation. According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, around 10,000 people in the U.S. are wrongfully convicted each year. This statistic urges us to ensure, not just that justice is delivered, but delivered correctly and judiciously. We urge those in position to do so, to reassess the case and seek justice by setting aside politically-motivated sentiments, approaching the case impartially, and to explore the potential for Derek Chauvin's pardon.
