Secure Part of Tybee Island Park for School Use

The Issue

My granddaughter attends school on Tybee Island, GA, and I have seen firsthand the challenges she faces due to limited outdoor space for play and learning. Our local school lacks sufficient facilities for outdoor activities that are crucial for children's development. Without adequate space, students are missing out on opportunities for physical exercise, outdoor learning, and the mental health benefits that come with being in nature.

Tybee Island has a beautiful park that could serve as an ideal extension of the school's limited playground. By securing a portion of this park, we can create a dedicated area for students to engage in physical activities, sports, and outdoor classes. This not only benefits students but also alleviates congestion in other community areas, fostering a safer and more organized environment for everyone.

The current playground space is not only insufficient but can often be overcrowded, which poses safety risks and limits the activities that can be conducted. Access to part of the park for school use would significantly improve the quality of education and student life, contributing to better academic performance and overall well-being.

Research has shown that outdoor play and exposure to green spaces enhance academic achievement, reduce stress, and improve attention spans among children. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children need at least one hour of physical play daily for optimal health. This is nearly impossible under the current constraints faced by the school.

We propose a community partnership to allocate a small, manageable portion of the park for school use during school hours. This solution respects the existing park usage by the community, as it maintains ample public access outside of school operation times. By coming together as a community, we can address the needs of our children without compromising the enjoyment of public spaces.

Let's work together to enhance our children's educational experience by providing them with the resources they need. Please sign this petition to advocate for the shared use of Tybee Island's park for school activities.
