Secure Overhead Shelter for Gary Comer College Prep Scholars

The Issue

For over fifteen years, the predominantly Black (96.2%)* and Brown (2.2%)* scholars at Chicago's Gary Comer College Prep have had to walk outside daily during inclement weather between two buildings on campus.  The main campus is located at 7131 S. South Chicago Avenue (founded in 2008).  Gary Comer College Prep is a part of the Noble Network of Charter Schools. Noble runs 17 charter public high schools and one middle school serving over 12,000 students.

Whenever the GCCP scholars go to lunch or participate in physical education activities, they must walk outside (closed campus) from the main building to the Gary Comer Youth Center (founded in 2006), one block away.  Nothing is in place to protect the scholars from Chicago's harsh winter snow and rain.

Due to the number of scholars attending the school, they do not have ample time to go to their lockers, secure outwear, and then transition to the youth center.  As a result, many students keep their coats with them all day long.

The lack of a covered walkway for the scholars is a substantial health and safety hazard for students in mobile wheelchairs that cannot transition as fast as their peers between buildings.  Noble states on its website, "its goal is to enable each student to lead an ethical, healthy, safe, and financially stable life."

Noble, please live up to this goal by installing a covered walkway on campus between the buildings.
