Secure Merit Scholarship Appeals at EKU

Secure Merit Scholarship Appeals at EKU
The Issue
As of Thursday, February 15, 2024, Eastern Kentucky University decision makers have decided they will no longer allow students with Merit Scholarships to apply for appeals concerning the usage and disbursement of these funds and the leftovers. These decisions were made and implemented with no word to students. Previously stated deadlines for these appeals were not followed through with or even considered when implementing this change, which has left many students, for example those of us preparing for study abroad programs, at loss due to the decisions made concerning the extension of this program. These decisions were made quickly and quietly, with no warning for those who it would heavily affect.
Merit Scholarships are awarded to students who have a history of high academic achievement, and are ensured for 8 semesters of education at EKU. Students who are expected to graduate early should have access to their full 8 semesters, which has typically been accessible through merit appeals. Students could use those leftover funds to study during summer or winter, or they could be applied to study abroad.
Please sign this petition to encourage directors to reevaluate these changes and extend the appeals until the originally stated deadlines. Without these appeals, many students will no longer be able to fulfill their educational opportunities and some may lose invested funds they put into these programs under the impression that the appeals would be available as they have always been. This is an immediate issue that needs addressed quickly. These decisions need awareness, and should be clearly communicated regularly on EKU's behalf in appropriate timing.
